10 Effective Ways to Burn Belly Fat

There’s no hard-and-fast rule for slim-down success: the best way to lose belly fat is the way that works around your lifestyle. 

 

If you follow an unsustainable plan, you won’t last: it’s as simple as that. 

 

In this article we lay out six principles that are applicable to everyone, whether you’re a total beginner starting your weight-loss journey or a seasoned pro who fell off the wagon over Christmas. 

 

These guiding lights will keep you on the straight and narrow, whether you’ve got time to hit the gym every day or a shift worker looking to manage your schedule. 

 

Don’t try to take on more than you can reasonably fit into one day. 

 

It’s important to reduce visceral fat, which does tend to lurk around the belly area, but that is best achieved by trying to slim down and tune up overall.

 

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

How it works: Apple cider vinegar helps speed up weight loss in many ways, one being that it speeds up the metabolism.

Studies have suggested that apple cider vinegar can increase satiety or feeling of fullness, helping you consume fewer calories and lose weight.
A recent study showed that drinking apple cider vinegar boosts fat burning and decreases fat and sugar production in the liver.

I can help by reducing fat storage, by increasing the number of genes that reduce belly fat storage.

What to do: The optimum amount of apple cider vinegar to consume daily is one-two tablespoons (15-30ml).
I usually have mine once in the morning before food and once before bed. Always consume before meals.

2. Drink your meals instead

Swapping one or two of your daily meals for a smoothie packed full of nutrients, is one of the best ways to lose weight whilst feeling fuller for longer.

How it works: There are certain smoothies that will wake up your metabolism and keep you full for hours.

3. Intermittent fasting

Along with ACV, Intermittent fasting is probably one of my favourite ways to lose fat QUICK!

How it works: It’s a strategy of eating that has you taking regular short-term fasts.

There are different types which you can read about here, however my personal favourite is the 16/8 plan. You fast for 16 hours and then only eat during an 8-hour window.
TRUST ME, after this you’re going to feel great!

What to do: Choose an 8-hour window that suits your schedule. For a lot of people, this 8-hour window is usually around noon to 8 p.m. 

The great thing about this is you will hopefully be asleep for the majority of the 16 hour fasting window, so you will just have to suppress the urge to eat for just a few hours.

4. Water, Water, Water

You’ve heard it all before, but water really is one of the best ways to speed up fat loss, especially in the abdominal area.

How it works: Getting plenty of water every day helps to flush your body of toxins. It will honestly prevent you from over-snacking, and will help slim you down overall. You’ll notice you are more energetic and your skin will be clearer.

What to do: Increase your water intake, 2-3 litres is recommended. Spread it out throughout the day, so it doesn’t feel like you’re drinking a whole lot in one sitting.

5. Stick to 3 meals a day

How it works: Many studies support “grazing” which is another way of defining eating small meals often.

However, when the body is fed every 2-3 hours, it will burn fuel from those meals rather than from its fat stores. Essentially, the body is NOT encouraged to burn any of the fat you already have stored in your body.

Eating just breakfast, lunch and dinner with no snacks in between will provide the body with a natural fast in between meals to encourage fat metabolism.

DON’T eat every 2-3 hours, because your body will become dependent on this constant supply of food.

What to do: Each week plan your meals for each day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) and stick to it.

Try not to snack in between and keep yourself busy, if you’re a “I eat when I’m bored” eater.

6. Foods to Boost metabolism & Suppress hunger

How it works: By boosting your metabolism and suppressing hunger, you naturally help to reduce belly fat.

Foods to boost metabolism

Peppers – The hotter the better, hot peppers such as chilli peppers, jalapeños, even cayenne powder give you a healthy dose of metabolism boosting vitamin C!

Berries – Berries, such as blackberries and raspberries are another metabolism boosting ingredient. They are packed full of Vitamin C and fibre.

Avocados – They are full of fibre, which is fantastic for weight loss and oh so good for you! This healthy fat will actually tell your body to release fat!

Citrus Fruit – Another big metabolism booster, so much good for you vitamin c and so easy to work into your diet! Squeeze some lemon, lime, orange, or all three fruits into your water and sip all day.

Foods to suppress hunger

Eggs – High in lean protein, eggs will help keep your cravings in check… so you will eat less and lose belly fat faster.

Beans – Beans are nature’s gift to mankind. They have the perfect balance of carbs and protein and they keep you full for hours. Black beans, kidney, lentils, garbanzo, and cannellini are all good choices.

Nuts and Seeds – Not only keep you full, the healthy protein can help you lose weight and even increase your metabolism. Almonds, walnuts, macadamia, cashews, pistachio, chia seeds, and hemp seeds are good examples.

Leafy Greens – Help you feel satisfied longer, boost your metabolism and turn off your hunger receptors. You will eat less and lose more belly fat just by increasing your leafy greens!

They’re low in calories and high in fibre, making them the perfect weight loss food. If your not a fan, you’re sure to be converted with these tasty recipes.

7. Avoid processed foods

If you’re looking to drop the kg’s FAST, then eating processed foods and sugars are simply a no no.

How it works: They are full of unnecessary carbs which will not help, but hinder your progress. If you are serious about slimming down and shedding belly fat, you must be strong and say no to these foods.

A good rule of thumb is if you have to ask whether it’s good for you or not, it’s probably not. Refined sugars are often hidden in an array of different products that you wouldn’t expect.

Make sure to check the labels before eating the products.

What to do: Some research suggests that simply replacing refined carbs with unprocessed starchy carbs may improve metabolic health and reduce belly fat.

In short eat foods with quality protein and get carbs from veggies. For example, replace juice drinks with flavoured water.

8. Say goodbye to alcohol!

Yes, it can be very tempting to reach for the merlot at the end of a particularly taxing day at the office.

How it works: Alcohol contains a very high amount of ’empty’ calories, which don’t have any nutritional value.

Women are more likely to store the fat created by empty calories on their hips, thighs and arms, men store it on their tummy, hence the ‘beer belly’.

What to do: If you’re keen on reducing your tummy fat quickly, it’s advised that you cut out alcohol from your diet completely.

If that’s too much, cut down the intake by half each day.

9. Work it out!

The best type of exercise I have found works effectively coupled with the above eating habits, is high intensity training.

How it works: HIIT workouts generally combine short bursts of intense exercise with periods of rest or lower-intensity exercise.

At fitness studios and online, these workouts often mix aerobic and resistance training. HIIT spikes the growth hormone which speeds up fat burning.

What to do: Now DON’T go crazy with this type of training.

Incorporate this form of exercise 2-3 times a week and you’ll notice a difference.
